North Sulawesi, Indonesia
Come learn about the history, language, culture and environment of the world's fourth most populous country.  Based in and around the city of Manado on the northern tip of the island of Sulawesi -- one of the largest of the some 17,000 islands comprising Indonesia -- this world encounter project will introduce student travellers to some of the diverse peoples of Indonesia, their ways of life, and their interactions with the ecosystems that surround them.

IRI's Fishing Boat Donation Program

IRI is pleased to announce that a portion of the proceeds from our Encounter North Sulawesi program will go towards the purchase of fishing boats that are in short supply among the villagers of Lembeh Island.  For each person that joins us for a World Encounter here in Manado, or for every $1000 we receive in donations, IRI will buy one complete traditional fishing boat and donate it to a local fisherman who has either lost his own boat, or needs to replace the one he has.  People who help to support this program will receive complete reports by email, including photos and fishing statistics for the boat that their money purchased.  This project is just one of the ways that IRI is helping to support sustainable endogenous development.
