The Intercultural Research Institute
recognizes that "first world" demand for exotic tourism locations
& experiences often shapes "third world" regional development in ways
detrimental to the interests of the host society. But cultural
tourism can be a component of a sustainable, endogenous regional development
strategy.
Through a reflexive restructuring of the dynamics
of the cultural exchanges constituting such tourism, I.R.I. seeks to transform
the places of tourism into spaces of progressive educational sharing benefitting
both host and guest alike. These educational projects -- coupled
with our activist interventions towards sustainable development -- create
a unique opportunity for field-based research across disciplines such as
cultural studies, anthroplogy, economics, sociology, ecology, linguistics,
political science, etc. Such research constantly informs and shapes
our educational and activist
endeavors.
In addition to studying & learning from what
we do, I.R.I. offers a variety of research facilitation services including
local networking, translation, outfitting, guiding and transportation.
Once completed, our research vessel will feature state of the art electronics & satellite communications systems and will be fully outfitted to serve for your marine
research needs. For more information contact
