Roundtrip airfare can be arranged by IRI if desired; rates depend on season and airlines' policies.

  • 10 Day's Lodging in and around the city of Manado
  • All meals provided in hotels or local restaurants
  • 4 days "working research"--snorkelling or scuba diving* in Bunaken Sea Garden Marine Preserve.  You will be taught to observe and catalog  species of fish and coral, as well as asked to report on your encounters with local residents and visitors.  This information will supplement cultural and environmental research being done by IRI, UNSRAT, and other local  nonprofit organizations.  You will be given full credit in any reports issued, both in print and online.
  • Access to the IRI computer center (including the internet) and the university library for preparing your reports.  We will expect 2-5 pages of sociocultural analysis to add to our body of ethnographic research.  Selected reports will be published in a printed journal, and all reports will appear online.
  • Seminars on local culture, language and ecology by IRI staff and local experts
  • 1 day tour of Bitung/Lembeh Island for observation of local fishing practices
  • 1 day tour of rainforest highlands and volcanic mountains with local guide
  • Travel visas arranged in advance
  • Ground transportation, including airport pickup
  • 1-year supporting membership in the Intercultural Research Institute
The Research Assistant Encounter is aimed at those who wish to participate more in IRI's local work.  As marine surveyors, your species population data and reports on coral damage will help to create an intensive database for understanding and managing the impact of man's activities on the reefs of Bunaken Island.  Your cultural research will help to educate others about life in this unique part of the world.  It will also create a new cultural awareness and sensitivity for yourself, that you will share with others for the rest of your life.  Finally, your observations will help determine where IRI places its resources for assisting the local people of North Sulawesi.  Your work will be compensated by IRI absorbing more than 10% of the cost of your Encounter.

Cost:          $1500/person  (excluding airfare)

Roundtrip airfare can be arranged by IRI if desired; rates depend on season and airlines' policies.
