NEW COURSE PROPOSAL SHEET

Proposed Course Title:   The Production of Culture

Proposed Course Prefix and Number:                AIEX 3xx

Proposed by:          Paul Burkhardt                          Date:   10/11/2001

Course Description:

This course integrates an interdisciplinary study of the production of popular cultural forms with an optional career internship experience.  Students will learn how to work with a variety of audio-visual production technologies for different media systems.  Students will also read and apply the sociological, political economic and cultural studies approaches to understanding the interconnected social, organizational, technical and economic formations comprising the production of culture. Students opting for the optional career internship credit will work with, and study as participant observers, a local arts production organization.  Students will write regular short essays on readings and lectures, keep a journal, propose and produce a cultural artifact accompanied by a research paper into the relevant productive processes and relations.  Students executing the internship option will also keep an additional internship journal and write a reflective analysis detailing their work experience.

Rationale:

This course builds upon the conceptual knowledge and methodological skills provided by the first and second year core curriculum by blending and applying theoretical and methodological approaches from the social sciences and humanities with an optional career internship option.  The combination of theoretical and substantive materials are designed to complement several existing AIC programs and concentrations, particularly Multimedia & Information Design, Fine &  Performing Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences.   The course will appeal to and benefit a wide pool of AIC students, will complement and feed the Community Arts Mentorship Program, and will help to ease the load on the career internship core component for students interested in related careers.
