1. You can use your browser on your modem- or ethernet-equipped home computer or visit an open computer lab to connect to the MOO. If you decide to use a computer lab, be sure to call and make sure that it is open to the public at the times that you need to use it (look in the CCIT publication I gave you at the beginning of the semester for lab locations, phone numbers, hours, etc.).
2. Open up a recent version of Netscape Communicator (4.08 or newer) or Internet Explorer (4.0 or later -- 4.5 on macs). You will need to make sure that your browser is java script enabled. To do this on Netscape Communicator, select "Edit", then "Preferences", then "Advanced". Make sure that the boxes for "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" are checked. To do this on Internet Explorer, select "View", then "Internet Options", then "Advanced". Make sure that the box "Enable Java JIT compiler" is checked.
3. Go to the class web page: http://www.one-world.org/engl100 and click on the OldPuebloMOO link.
4. To top left of the first paragraph of written text, there are a bunch of red options. The first option is "Connect". Click on "Connect".
5. This will take you to the encore express login page. At the top left corner of the page, fill in your User ID and Password. Make sure that your new password is capitalized exactly as it is in the email that you received recently. After verifying that you have correctly entered your User ID and Password, hit the grey "Log in" button. And shazam. You're connected.
6. Note that the two windows on the left are pretty much as you have seen before: the top window displays the text of the OldPuebloMOO, while the bottom window is where you type commands (e.g., 'main', 'say hi', ':smiles', etc.). In the window on the right side, you will find text descriptions as well as icons that you can point & click on to view, operate, move to, etc.
7. For example, point & click on "The Fountain" and you move to The Fountain. (you could also have typed 'fountain' (w/ no quotes of course) in the lower left window to move to The Fountain as before). If you point & click on another character, you will 'look' at that character. If you point & click on the Historical Marker, you will read it. Take some time to look at the objects, buildings and characters you pass by. Read the text carefully. If you get lost type 'look' in the lower left window to figure out where you are. If you need help, type 'help'.
8. Note the button bar at the top of the screen. You can hit 'help', or change your character preferences with 'options', or find out who's on the MOO with 'who'.
9. To get to the Mount Lemmon classroom, go through The Fountain, through Old Main, through The Hall of Classes and finally to the Mount Lemmon Classroom.
10. Once you get to the classroom, type 'look blackboard' to read the instructions written there.
