Final Exam Practice Question / Room #1
Question #1 "Kingsolver writes that "bearing witness is not the
same as possession" (155). What does she mean by "bearing witness"
and by "possession"? How do these concepts resonate with the
ideas expressed by Ortiz? Which of the texts you've read/viewed this
semester _represent_ identities, relations and conflicts within & between
cultures, genders, classes? Write an essay in which you discuss how
these representations are "bearing witness" or "possessing".

experiences in
order to understand or appreciate their own culture"
CrisR says, "I think it's past tense...."
KristinG says, "not much- what are you guys talking about?"
noooch guest says, " stuff....ha ha"
KristinG says, "I think the importance of bearing witness instead of
possession is that
you can't truly understand the meaning and importance of something
until you've
experienced it"
Brent says, "right on"
noooch guest says, " exactly...i agree"
JennM says, " I think that is true....you can only have so much empathy"
rich guest says, "so what makes her in a position to talk about it

through it""
Knh says, "experience is important but the question is reguarding the
difference between
the two"
Brent says, "yeah, some is just fake""

JennM says, "sometimes it is easier to have a grasp on something you

Knh says, "possession is more personal"
CrisR says, "but I agree that you can't just transform yourself into
another race or
culture which means that you can't fully understand their experiences

stephanieW guest says, "hi-----i think that it has to do a lot with
how a person
understands another"
KristinG says, "the difference is that witness is the actual experience
and the possession
is just taking a claim on what they think it might be like- almost
like hypocrisy"
JennM says, " I don't understand what is meant by possession "
CrisR says, "I think it's the opposite"
pablo has arrived.
Brent says, "that is is your own first hand experience""
KristinG says, "I think possession is meant to be the personal experience"
stephanieW guest says, "possession, more or less growing up with it
and living it"
Knh says, "bearing witness is an outsider's experience, possession
is someone laying claim
to that group"
CrisR says, "bearing witness would be experiencing something from the
outside and
possession would be actually possessing the heritage and culture"
rich guest says, "witness is observing the experiences""
KristinG says, "that way, you can claim it as your own"
pablo says, "possession seems to be portrayed in a negative light as
compared to bearing
witness."
JennM says, "well what is the difference then between possession and
first hanmd
exsperience?"
CrisR says, "how is possession negative?"
pablo says, "they are both concepts about how you might write about
or otherwise represent
stuff from other cultures / experiences."
Brent says, "the possesion of the experiences we have read about is
neggative""
JennM says, "oh...never mind..I understand"
noooch guest says, "yeah brent"
rich guest says, "yea, but to truly understand the emotions of the
people, experience is
the only thing that would put you on the same level""

where native
americans are equated with pottery shards."

noooch guest says, "ohhhh"
Brent says, "right right""
JennM says, "but we should know all of the...."
Knh says, "i don't understand how possession is negative"
KristinG says, "then why does Kingsolver care so much about experiencing
things hands-on
and as her own experience before she can understand everything?"
CrisR says, "wait, I still don't understand your view on possession"
rich guest says, "sneaky little blue light":"
stephanieW guest says, "in a way i don"
pablo says, "why does kingsolver dislike the fact that her child thinks
that native
americans are people who lived long ago at the beginning of the story?"
noooch guest says, "what?"
Brent says, "what is stephanie saying/asking?'"
JennM says, " it can be consitered negative becasue when you are involved
in something it
is difficult to see hwat is acually goign on"
stephanieW guest says, "I ....don't understand why it is negative either"
stephanieW guest says, "sorry i pushed enter"
pablo says, "why would that be negative?"
KristinG says, "because of what people have told her and from what
she's seen from the
outside- not experiencing it as her own"
rich guest says, "b/c she has fallen into the sterotypes that
she has heard from
uncreditable sources""
pablo says, "or how might bearing witness be different?"
Brent says, "it is only neggative when ina neggative sittuation, like
possesion of the
experience of rasim""
KristinG says, "wouldn't that be considered bearing witness and not
possession?"
CrisR says, "it's negative because her child is making Native Americans
seem like purely
historical figures, but I don't see how that is connected to possession"
pablo says, "what particular passages from kingsolver make the difference
between the two
concepts clear?"
noooch guest says, "good call brent"
pablo says, "you might cite them or refer to them in your essay."
stephanieW guest says, "you may interpret something different if you
are bearing
witness--one may not get the just of it"

Knh says, "i would think that bearing witness could be negative only
because the person is
an outsider"

than bearing witness"
stephanieW guest says, "me too"
CrisR says, "I don't either"
noooch guest says, "me neither..."
pablo has arrived.
Knh says, "me either"
CrisR says, "maybe because it would make you biased....."
stephanieW guest says, "maybe"
Brent says, "it is not worse, it is just different""
JennM says, " exactly"
Knh says, "they both can be biased"
KristinG says, " I would think that bearing witness would be a better
perspectve than
taking a view without the experience"
noooch guest says, "either way couldn't that bethe case"
bfroggie says, "i think that possession is viewed as negative because
it arrogantly places
an outsider into the role of an insider"
bfroggie says, "to me, i think however both Ortiz and Kingsolver are
bearing witness"
KristinG says, "not if they experience something- then they take on
the role as an
insider"
rich guest says, "i spank kristen is right""
pablo says, "hmmm. if you can't figure out the difference in
the concepts, perhaps you
might not want to write your final about it. i would suggest
looking closely at
kingsolver's text and finding where she talks about it & how she
relates these concepts to
the other scenes in her essay."
JennM says, " If you are an outsider you can see how all teh peices
fit together, but when
you are an insider, you are one of teh pieces"
CrisR says, "well of course bearing witness is better than ignorance"
pablo nods to bfroggie
bfroggie says, "but will they ever really be a part of that culture
or race, even if they
experience it?"
Brent says, "rich, you spank kristen?""
CrisR says, "but if you're an outsider your may not understand all
of the piceces"
noooch guest says, "yeah what was tat about"
rich guest says, "i think kristen is right""
pablo makes all the paddles in the room disappear
bfroggie says, "i think you can become part of the culture, but will
never fully be an
insider, or part of that race"
pablo nods
noooch guest says, "ha ha"
Brent says, "that makes more sense""
CrisR says, "true"
KristinG says, "I agree with that"
pablo says, "what other texts from the class might be considered as
"bearing witness:" or
"possessing"?"
noooch guest says, "yep"
pablo goes out.
Knh says, "i don't think it's about understanding the concepts, it's
more about your view
of each"
Brent says, "me too""
bfroggie says, "i could never fully understand how it feels to be a
Native American, no
matter how much of their culture i experienced"
CrisR says, "you do have to differentiate between culture and race"
rich guest says, "that by bearing witness you get a more accurate view
than without it""
noooch guest says, "imagining Indians.....maybe????"
bfroggie says, "i think Imagining Indians is about possession"
CrisR says, "yeah, but not the full view that possession brings"
Brent says, "good job rich"
KristinG says, "maybe that bearing witness is important to kingsolver
because that way,
every view can be taken into consideration and then evaluated from
her perspective before
she discovers the truth"
Brent says, "bfroggie isright about the mvie""
stephanieW guest says, "yes that is true because the movie producers
felt that they
understood the Indians when really they were only exploiting them"
CrisR says, "but that's her truth, not the truth of the race or culture"
KristinG says, "even though possession is important to obtain the experience,
you still
need a wide variety of cultures to understand the importance of each
one"
Brent says, "what is our thesis""
bfroggie says, "bearing witness is different than simple interpretation.
Interpretation
can be totally wrong and biased, as the filmmakers in imagining indians,
where bearing
witness draws in aspects of experience and respect"
noooch guest says, " yeah...?"
Brent says, "we need to work on that ""
bfroggie says, "i agree with Kristen"
Knh says, "true but she is saying that she can see many sides before
deciding the truth"
KristinG says, "exxactly"
CrisR says, "but what exactly is truth?"
Brent says, "word""
CrisR says, "just her views on a situation?"
bfroggie says, "so are we supposed to write thesis statements?"
noooch guest says, "true dat...uhhh huh"
Brent says, "this is deep""
noooch guest says, "4real"
bfroggie says, "its complicated"
KristinG says, "the truth is whatever you make out of the situation
with your beliefs and
your experiences, it is up to the individual but different for others"
noooch guest says, "it sux"
Knh says, "there is no truth right now, we are just discussing the
difference between the
two"
rich guest says, "the reason that she is not claiming possession is
because that would
make her uncreditable b/c she is not of the same ethnicity, but by
bearing wittness she is
able to find truths in the stories about the ansectory, and relay these
truths to the
younger generations""
KristinG says, "what may be true to one prson may be false to another
depending on their
beliefs and experiences and viwpoints"
Brent says, "yeah, but bearing witness and possesion is the topic""
CrisR says, "so she's bearing witness in order to create her own truth
in relation to
other cultures as well as her own life"
KristinG says, "right"
Knh says, "correct"
CrisR says, "riiiight"
pablo has arrived.
KristinG says, "alright- let's work on a thesis"
bfroggie says, "i dont know, i dont think anybody really possesses
a culture, if they have
been exposed to any other culture, they themselves become a new 'mix'
in a sense and do
not possess the culture that they "belong to" because of race"
Brent says, "who is she, the patient in Imaging Indians'"
pablo says, "how might you decide upon other texts from the class to
include? why would
you pick them or how would you relate them together?"
pablo goes out.
KristinG says, "what about Lonestar?"
Knh says, "wich would that be"
Brent says, "that would be good""
pablo has arrived.
stephanieW guest says, "she is an indian (mad and feels exploited)
to Brent"
noooch guest says, "i dunno"
bfroggie says, "anything that has to do with race and culture and the
difference between
them i think would work, like lonestar"
Knh says, "possession or bearing witness"
pablo says, "good is there a specific scene or pattern you would discuss?"
pablo goes out.
Brent says, "how do you do that""
KristinG says, "could describe how the two lovers experience something
but don't
understand why things are the way they are until they find out the
truth- compare beliefs
before and after the discovery"
CrisR says, "what about the Milagro Bean Field War? (wasn't that
the name of it?)"
Knh says, "what does that have to do with the question"
KristinG says, "that way- connect them with witness and then possession"
Brent says, "l'll kill you bob""
pablo has arrived.
bfroggie says, "i think milagro bean field would work too"
pablo draws a peace symbol on the chalk board
KristinG says, "how"
CrisR says, "I just can't remeber a lot about that movie"
pablo goes out.
bfroggie says, "i'm thinking. . ."
CrisR says, "but I know that there was obviously a lot of cultural
possession with that
guy and the bean field"
JennM says, "yeah..that would totoally oqwrk"
stephanieW guest says, "well the old man was of possession in Milagro"
KristinG says, "could use the old man- the ghost and spirit for a symbol
of witness"
JennM says, "rememeber Daniel Stern was interviewing the old man about
his traditions"
CrisR says, "and then you could compare the opinions of the white people
who bore witness
to his compassion for it"
bfroggie says, "maybe talk about the lawyer, he bore witness to the
town's problems, but
ddidn't possess the culture or race himself?"
KristinG says, "I think he's more bearing witness because he's seen
everything from the
outside point of view"
CrisR says, "yes, that's a perfect example of bearing witness (Daniel
Stern)"
KristinG says, "the old man, that is"
Brent says, "but, he was a part of it all""
CrisR says, "who was the lawyer again?"
KristinG says, "but he didn't experience anything because he wasn't
living- he only
observed"
bfroggie says, "and talk about how the white landowners were like the
filmmakers, not
interested in bearing witness, only in interepretation and exploitation"
CrisR says, "who?"
KristinG says, "the ghost- the old man that comes to visit"
bfroggie says, "the lawyer was john heard"
CrisR says, "oh, yeah; okay"
bfroggie says, "the guy who played the dad in home alone"
noooch guest says, " peter mcalister"
KristinG says, "right"
rich guest says, "no i dont think home alone would work""
noooch guest says, " kevins dad..."
stephanieW guest says, "the reporter guy"
JennM says, "good memeory"
KristinG says, "alright- what about the thesis?"
stephanieW guest says, "does anyone want to paste theirs?"
Brent says, "home alone is not southwestern'"
CrisR says, "uh, does anyone have theirs?"
Knh says, "it needs to say something about the importance of the difference
between the
two"
rich guest says, "yea, and we didnt really talk about it too much this
semester""
noooch guest says, "ha ha"
KristinG says, "let's think of something: how about along the lines
of the importance of
both bearing witness and the actual experience of a situation- how
it relates to
kinsolver"
Knh says, "ok"
bfroggie says, "who said that home alone WAS a western? i dont think
anybody, i was just
trying to identify the actor"
Brent says, "is anyone ready with a thesis, what is that green glow""
noooch guest says, " brent calm down"
noooch guest says, " itsgoing to be okay!@"
stephanieW guest says, "it will be fine"
Knh says, "brent are you ok"

CrisR says, "drugs are bad"
noooch guest says, " trippin huh brent???"
noooch guest says, " no more drugs brent"
noooch guest says, " stop the addiction!"
rich guest says, "but the point is not that she cant tell about the
Native Americans b/c
she hasnt experienced it, it is that she does not claim to have experienced
it which makes
her creditable(unbiast), more creditable than the people who havent
witnessed it and
believe the sterotypes" "
stephanieW guest says, "such as her daughter"

CrisR says, "something about how bearing witness and possession and
two important
relations to cultures that both Ortiz and Kingsolver experience"

five minutes left."
stephanieW guest says, "her daughter believed the small stereotypes(the

pablo has arrived.
bfroggie says, "its a complicted subject"
pablo nods to crisr

bearing possssion"

Brent says, "that movie is dope""
Knh says, "next part about the author"

CrisR says, "there goes quality conversation..."
bfroggie says, "i think also we need to define the difference between
race and culture,
and maybe also discuss plain interpretation as opposed to bearing
witness. . "
stephanieW guest says, "yeah and the first body paragraph could include
Kingsolvers'
writing and how she was represented as bearing witness"
CrisR says, "yes"
KristinG says, "how her experince has lead her to believe that witness
is better than
possession"
rich guest says, "haha""
noooch guest says, " ya good"
Knh says, "the last part should be personal experience"
noooch guest says, " its 12:21.....uh ohhhh"
KristinG says, "i like bfroggie's idea- put that in the first part
of the paragraph"
Brent says, "that is possesion""
CrisR says, "we could just tell them a summary instead of an actual
outline"
bfroggie says, "and relate to the other texts, like imagining indians,
and lonestar"
bfroggie says, "thanks kristen"
stephanieW guest says, "then we could discuss why it is represented
that why--lead into
how Ortiz has possession over his Acoma tribe"

theresa guest says, "his characters have possesion if their lives and
action""
BeckyK says, "we can relate alot of our readings and movies""
AnnetteCh says, " so then what is possesion"
Angela says, "but i thought the guy who wrote the book had personal
knowledge of the
war,...through his father or something""
theresa guest says, "because most of them were real people""
pablo has arrived.
Angela says, ""and personal knowledg would possesion....so the author
of bisbee has
posession""
theresa guest says, "do we all have tothink of one thesis or one fo
the group?""
CaraJ says, " i think each of us do""
Angela says, "grr..i don't know guys""
pablo says, "possession might be like "usurping someone else's costume"
or "preserving 2
animals in an ark / museum / zoo"?"
CaraJ says, " huh?.....""
theresa guest says, "but how could he have personal knowledge of what
happened to other
people in Bisbee?""
Angela says, "yes, true""
AnnetteCh says, "I don't get possesion"
pablo says, "try to think of specific scenes or patterns from the movies
that we've
watched (or bixbee 17 / other readings) that might allow you to explore
these ideas."
theresa guest says, "the miners being carted away in the boxcars was
a possesion""
pablo says, "you can possess a necklace and display it."
Angela says, "annette..if you were to write a story about your family,
that is an example
of posstssion""
BeckyK says, "Milagro Beanfield War also represents two cultures
the author is bearing
witness to them" "he is showing what it was like for them in Milagro""
AnnetteCh says, "okay thanks"
pablo says, "but kingsolver seems nervous about possessing other people
or their stories
as your own."
CaraJ says, " it relats directly to u, and u have say in it , righ?""
pablo says, "that doesn't mean you can't write about them?"
pablo goes out.
Angela says, "yeah""
theresa guest says, "I think the uthor of bisbee wants us to learn
from the expereinces of
others like Kingsolver""
BeckyK says, "I agree"
theresa guest says, "the milogroe beanfield war was a good idea!""
Angela says, "yes, that is a great point""
CaraJ says, " so the bean field is the possession of the poor families
who have no
hope...that is one example""
BeckyK says, "yes""
theresa guest says, "yep""
Angela says, "wait...how is beanfild possion""
AnnetteCh says, "isn't it by ownership"
Angela says, "sorry, i am slow sometimes""
Angela says, "yeah, but the author did not own it""
theresa guest says, "in that movie weren't they fighting over ownership
of the
beanfield?""
Angela says, "yes""
BeckyK (asleep) has disconnected.
theresa guest says, "So is that contradicting Kingsolvers beliefs?""
Angela leaves for Mt. Lemmon Classroom
CaraJ says, "k. what about posession in Imagining Indians....what about
the
truth........the true rituals were psessed by the Native Americans,
and they wouldn't give
them to hollywood...because they were afraid of being misinterpretted""
TimO says, "i think so because he was not in the beanfield war"
Angela arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
MonicaC says, "won't they be misinterpreted anyway then?"
AnnetteCh says, "Hollywood decided to make their own representation
and bear false witness
to the rituals"
theresa guest says, "that's a good point about Imagining indains""
CaraJ says, "truetrue...........probably""
Angela says, "tha tis a good one!"
AnnetteCh says, "so you have both possesion and bearing witness in
Imaging Indians"
CaraJ says, "k. so what would be a good example then....i am
kind of lost.....can't think
of anyhing else""
MonicaC says, "does any one have a thesis?"
CaraJ says, "nope""
theresa guest says, "Are we supposed to come up with a thesis?""
AnnetteCh says, "not yet"
CaraJ says, " i think each of us are""
AnnetteCh says, "yeah"
theresa guest says, "we're not supposed t do it as a group?""
CaraJ says, " i think he meant each of us.....maybe not though""
CaraJ says, " we only have 7 minutes left""
theresa guest says, "Yuck! I guess I better think of one quick
then..""
Angela says, ""ok...i think a thesis for this essay should have to
do wiht the ideas of
bearing witness and possession, and how they are represented differently
in both essays""
The housekeeper arrives to cart BeckyK off to bed.
MonicaC says, "yep sounds good to me"
Angela says, "and then also tie in the milagro beanfield war""
MonicaC says, "the two essays have very different attitudes toward
the worl, wouldn't you
say?"
MonicaC says, "world"
Angela says, "yes, i agree""
theresa guest says, "For both Kingsolver and Ortiz the meanings of
bearing witness and
possesion hold contrasting meanings.""
CaraJ says, " i would...if i had read them (:""
AnnetteCh says, "okay how about... Imaging Indians illustrates the
concepts in
Kingsolver's essay about the differences between possesion and bearing
witness. The
indians possess their rituals but Hollywood manipulates those rituals.
They bear false
witness to the Indians possesions.... I don't know"
MonicaC says, "ortiz is a little uh... hostile."
AnnetteCh says, "confused"
CaraJ says, " i know""
theresa guest says, "yeaj je's raging""
Angela says, "one deals with the preservation of a culture, and the
other deals with the
edcuation of others""
AnnetteCh says, "5 min left"
theresa guest says, "or yeah he's""
theresa guest says, "or the preservation of education""
Angela says, "ok true""
MonicaC says, "no, he wants to change education"
CaraJ says, " it's hard to tie the two together....maybe just something
about bearing
witness is more with education..wheras pocession is like showing others
what u
have..........preservation""
Angela says, "that's good cara""
theresa guest says, "you could show the two as opposites?""
TimO says, "they both want people to bear witness to the native american
culture"
Angela says, "i think that both edcuation and preservation are also
imporant themes in
this essay""
theresa guest says, "I agree""
MonicaC says, "ye, then relate that to your own context"
AnnetteCh says, "this is awful"
CaraJ says, " one wants topresereve and the other wants to open it
up......it's like the
forest ...some people want topreserve it, and to doso they want no
one to go and visit
it..others want to show it off, and make it open to the public...sorry
that's pathetic""
Angela says, "i agree""
theresa guest says, "That's good..very visual""
CaraJ says, " k. i think we can't get this done and should give up
cuz there's like a
minute left........i think we have made progress though....we should
be fine on the
final""
Angela says, "oh, i like that cara!!!!""
CaraJ says, " thanx""
MonicaC says, "yeah. its like ortiz thinks his stories are already
dead, so he must save
them quickly, the other is about sharing the stories"
CaraJ says, " yep'"
AnnetteCh says, "I know let's leave while we still hwve some sanity
left"

Final Exam Practice Question / Room #2
Question 2: "In 102, you have closely analyzed texts and considered the way that the context of a text as well as your own context as a reader influence the production of meaning. Both Kingsolver and Ortiz show the ways that context influences education, identity and relationships. Explain how context works in these two essays. Making specific reference to your reading and writing this semester, write an essay that demonstrates the importance of context in understanding.
JennR arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
TommyD arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
TommyD says, "sup jenn"
JennR says, "hey baby"
StephanieCobb guest arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
TommyD says, "that is no good"
StephanieCobb guest says, "hey whats up?"
TommyD says, "school needs to be over"
StephanieCobb guest says, "yeah I agree"
StephanieCobb guest says, "maybe we should get started "
TommyD says, "probly"
JennR says, "I kinda wrote a thesis already, but I don't know if it
even works. Should I
paste it?"
TommyD says, "go for it"
JennR says, "k, hold on"
StephanieCobb guest says, "yeah"
TommyD says, "what r we supposd to write a thesis about?"
-----------------------------------JennR-----------------------------------
Thesis: Both of these texts showed that context has influenced education.
In my essay I
will explain how each of the essays did so, and the strategies that
were used; such as:
pathos, word choice, tone, imagery, and more.
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
TommyD says, "oh, nevermind"
JennR says, "is that what he's looking for?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "how would we incorporate the stuff from
class?"
JennR says, "that's what I don't understand"
pablo has arrived.
StephanieCobb guest says, "Lets see we could alter the thesis a little
"
TommyD says, "yo pablo"
JennR says, "that info should go into the introduction rather than
the thesis."
pablo says, "howdy. y'all ok in here? any questions for
me?"
TommyD says, "yeah, I believe so"
pablo grins
JennR says, "How are we supposed to include info about class in our
thesis?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Yeah we are okay just trying to decide how
to work the class
stuff ito the thesis"
KamiaG arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
JennR says, "previous writings and such"
pablo says, "you can actually tell stories or use description or summary
as evidence."
TommyD says, "tell stories of what?"
pablo says, "or you can quote or describe movies / texts / etc."
JennR says, "make more of a intro paragraph to go along well with the
thesis?"
pablo says, "either the texts or your own experiences."
StephanieCobb guest says, "Do we need to explain that in the thesis
specifically?"
TommyD says, "ok"
pablo says, "the more specific the thesis the better."
KamiaG pablo are you going to be posting this on the web so that we
can get tips from it
JennR says, "ok"
pablo says, "you shouldn't just rephrase the assignment as your thesis,
but relate the
thesis to your own prepared ideas / evidence."
pablo nods to kamia
PrincessM arrives from Lemmon Three
pablo says, "the idea is to take the prompt and indicate where you
are going to run with
it."
pablo says, "i'll be back"
pablo goes out.
PrincessM leaves for Mt. Lemmon Classroom
TommyD says, "ok"
JennR says, "k, i'm still kind of confused on how I would change that.
Do you guys know
how it would sound better?"
iNsPecTaH arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
StephanieCobb guest says, "In these two essays we see how education
is related to text we
learn in the class room. In this essay I would like to discuss
how my experiances support
what these two authors are trying to get across."
TommyD says, "well, u kinda have to know the questions to write a thesis
though"
JennR says, "VERY GOOD, BRAVO!!!"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Hey what do you think of that?"
JennR says, "ok, that wasn't soo hard, I can do that."
JennR says, "good thesis!!!"
TommyD says, "nice nice"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Okay then you could expalin what both authors
thesis's were
and blah blah blah"
TommyD says, "then u can ramble off about ur experiences for a long
time"
StephanieCobb guest says, "then we could relate that to some thing
that happened in class"
TommyD says, "tru"
JennR says, "maybe you could say : how my experiences in life and the
classroom support
............"
StephanieCobb guest says, "hey that's even better "
JennR says, "to really get the point across that you are discussing
the class info and
your own life experiences."
StephanieCobb guest says, " =)"
JennR says, "thankz"
StephanieCobb guest says, "no probem"
JennR says, "does anybody else have a thesis?"
TommyD says, "I just got the packet last night"
TommyD says, "so I havent read anythign yet"
JennR says, "k, maybe not :)"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Okay Cool "
TommyD says, "I am slacking "
JennR says, "now we have to write an outline, on the word document"
StephanieCobb guest says, "So do we need to make an outline or something?"
TommyD says, "what word doc.?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "okay lets get started with that"
JennR says, "we have to make one"
JennR says, "how would you like to start it off?"
TommyD says, "oh"
TommyD says, "waht is it about?"
iNsPecTaH says, "this question"
StephanieCobb guest says, "the essay?"
JennR says, "this imaginary essay we are going to write."
TommyD says, "ok"
JennR says, "I mean outline, not write"
TommyD says, "yeah"
JennR says, "so first we start with the terrific thesis"
StephanieCobb guest says, "yeah which was ?"
TommyD says, "ok, then we write about how the stories influenced us?"
iNsPecTaH says, "yep"
KamiaG says, " ."
KamiaG '
TommyD says, "what?"
TommyD says, "or not"
TommyD says, "ok, so how did the stories influence ur view of the sw?"
JennR says, "say I pasted the thesis onto a word doc, how should we
start the next
paragraph? What should it be about?"
iNsPecTaH says, "some examples maybe"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Well let's see first lets tell the audience
the thoughts of
kingsolver and ortiz"
iNsPecTaH says, "at least something we can start building off of"
JennR says, "Maybe we should start off talking about how the SW is
viewed, stereotypes and
etc....."
JennR says, "first Ortiz and Kingsolver?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Maybe but we need to find a way to let the
audience know what
point the ohters were getting across"
JennR says, "others?"
JennR says, "who"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Ortiz and Kingsolver "
TommyD says, "write about their descriptions of southwestern things
and if they match
yours"
JennR says, "ok, so lets start off with how they formulated their views,
second paragraph
could be on how people view the SW (stereotypes etc...) and then ....."
JennR says, "yeah?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Cool "
JennR says, "ok, hold on 2 min while I type this in a word doc"
TommyD says, "because then u can go into personal experience"
TommyD says, "k"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Okay so what point do we want to bring out
from the essays?"
TommyD says, "that their portrayals either match or dont match yours?"
TommyD says, "and y or y not"
StephanieCobb guest says, "okay "
StephanieCobb guest says, "so we could talk about how misrepresentation
is used alot in
the schools and how we tried to fix that this semester in class"
TommyD says, "how it is used by pretty much everyone in general, I
think"
TommyD says, "not just schools"
StephanieCobb guest says, "yeah "
JennR says, "do you want me to paste the outline so far, to see how
we can revise it?"
TommyD says, "and our class tried to show us the real side of the picture"
TommyD says, "sure"
JennR says, "hold on"
KamiaG i'm still here just trying to make an outline
StephanieCobb guest says, "that is true but we may want to focus on
school because of the
Board remember when Paul was talking aobut taht in class"
-----------------------------------JennR-----------------------------------
I. Thesis: "In these two essays we see
how education is related to text we learn in

A. views of two writers
III. Personal Views on the Southwest
A. Stereotypes
B. Things we've learned to abolish these stereotypes
C. Integration of writings from class and Ortiz and Kingsolver
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
JennR says, "what else, or what should I change?"
TommyD says, "that looks really good"
JennR says, "what should I change though?"
TommyD says, "in the essay, we would want to talk about stuff like
Imagining Indians and
Lonestar maybe, and stuff like that"
StephanieCobb guest says, "we need to find specific things in the essays
to incorporate "
TommyD says, "yeah, but not for an outline"
JennR says, "ok"
iNsPecTaH says, "in III we should throw in some personal evidence
of such things"
JennR says, "hold on"
pablo has arrived.
pablo says, "any questions in here?"
pablo says, "why don't you all work on developing a structure / outline."
TommyD says, "yeah, like under A. stereotypes, have personal influences
under it"
pablo says, "you could do it individually, or as a group."
TommyD says, "that is what we're doing"
pablo says, "but try to figure out what you want to include and what
order you will
present it."
----------------------------------KamiaG-----------------------------------
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
StephanieCobb guest says, "We were talking about how this whole semester
we were trying ot
remove the normal stereotypes that we run into every day...we may want
to spend some time
talking about that"
pablo says, "there will be a transcript of the session posted on the
website."
pablo nods to steph
StephanieCobb guest says, "Cool thanks Pablo"
pablo goes out.

D. Ortiz and Kingsolver info
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
TommyD says, "ok"
TommyD says, "u could add personal experiences under III"
JennR says, "What comes after that? I don't know how to include specific
info into this
without writing a couple paragraphs for each section of the outline."
StephanieCobb guest says, "Oh after C we could add soemthing that states
how the class
tried to overcome the stereotypes we see "
TommyD says, "that would be B"
pablo has arrived.
TommyD says, "things we learned to abolish the s-types"
JennR says, "maybe we could abolish BCD and make one whole section
about the stereotypes
we've learned and a second section about how they've been abolished?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Compare how Ortiz talks about overcomeing
to how we have over
come stereotypes "
pablo says, "the more specifics you can include from the final readings
or from the
movies/texts from the class, the better your outline will make sense."
TommyD says, "ok"
pablo says, "it may even allow you to see a more specific thesis."
pablo goes out.
KamiaG i agree with Stephanie
TommyD says, "he is annoying"
iNsPecTaH says, "he knows what he si talking about"
TommyD says, "ok, so we need to put specifics in the outline"
TommyD says, "tru"
KamiaG Careful tommy, he can read that
StephanieCobb guest says, "and then we could say that the movies we
saw helped us with
that and compare how Kingsolver says that movies are all bad"
pablo has arrived.
pablo thinks kamiag is wise
pablo goes out.
TommyD says, "haha"
iNsPecTaH says, "he knows all"
TommyD says, "omnipotent"
KamiaG lol
StephanieCobb guest says, "Because if we show that the movies we saw
helped us understand
how people really are then the movies are not all bad like she says
they are....Does that
make any sense?"
TommyD says, "anyway, back to the essay"
iNsPecTaH says, "yes it does"
TommyD says, "yeah, that makes sense"
TommyD says, "but we have to add that, for the most part, they are
bad because there are
very few of them that arent the stereotypical kind"
TommyD says, "anyone there?"
iNsPecTaH says, "yesireebob"
pablo has arrived.
TommyD says, "but we need specific instances from stuff like II or
Lonestar"

C. How all of these things, plus these 2 writings, have shown the falsification.
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
TommyD says, "or some other movie or text"
JennR says, "is this better? What else should I put?"
pablo looks at the outline admiringly.
pablo says, "remember when you are preparing that sentence outlines
are often more
effective than subject/topic outlines."
KamiaG (asleep) has disconnected.
iNsPecTaH says, "byooteeful."
JennR says, "yeah, I know, I just can't seem to think straight right
now! "
pablo says, "with the predication of a sentence outline, you clearly
express connections &
relations between elements of your essay."
TommyD says, "nice outline"
pablo goes out.
JennR says, "thankz, what else can I do to it? we need an ending
also!"
TommyD says, "tru dat"
pablo has arrived.
pablo says, "ok. let's try and finish up the outline ... only
five minutes left.""
pablo goes out.
JennR says, "ok"
JennR says, "what else?"
JennR says, "help, my brain is stuck?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "okay cool so how does that sound"
TommyD says, "how about, now that we have gotten rid of our stereotypes,
this class has
turned us into perfect people..."
iNsPecTaH says, "well, it will be everyones duty to clean it up a little."
JennR says, "how does what sound?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "Oh I Just got my outline done let me paste

TommyD says, "not too bad"
iNsPecTaH says, "neet"
pablo says, "ok."
TommyD says, "nice"
JennR says, "very good! All we need is more specific info about
previous texts and that
is great"
TommyD says, "yup"
iNsPecTaH says, "werks fer mee"
TommyD says, "pretty much, we just need to add specifics"
JennR says, "ok, it's time to go!"
pablo says, "yes. are there specific scenes from say imagining
indians or lonestar or
bisbee 17 that you could relate to your thesis?"
StephanieCobb guest says, "I thought we could run with the fight back
thing?"
TommyD says, "yeah"
JennR says, "definetly"
pablo says, "two minutes left"
iNsPecTaH says, "fight back?!"
iNsPecTaH says, "what you mean/"
pablo says, "try to suggest a specific scene to describe / use as evidence."
iNsPecTaH says, "?"
pablo goes out.
StephanieCobb guest says, "it would help the end come along?"
JennR says, "I have to run across campus... aaaahhh!"
TommyD says, "me to"
iNsPecTaH says, "not me"
iNsPecTaH says, "hehe"
TommyD says, "saferide should run during the day"
iNsPecTaH says, "anyways... what is this fight back thing?"
pablo has arrived.
JennR says, "I really like the fighting back idea, good job!"
pablo goes out.
TommyD says, "fight back against who?"
JennR says, "time to go Pable?"
iNsPecTaH says, "could someone please explain it to me"

back and
holding on to the traditions of his people"

Masters says, "without this education and "upholding of traditions"
i guess you could say,
their culture would be lost"
JessicaH says, "yeah, same with me....so im just going off of what
was said in class"
TracyR says, "ok sounds good"
pablo has arrived.
pablo says, "have you shared your thesis statement ideas?"
TracyR says, "more or less"
JessicaH says, "not really...we are just discussing...."
Annabelle says, "no"
pablo says, "ok"
EBrown3328 arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
pablo says, "you might try to come up with a thesis and an outline
-- perhaps as a group."
JessicaH says, "ok"
Masters says, "sounds good""
EBrown3328 says, "sorry, i had trouble connecting so i switched computers.""
PamelaM says, "that sounds like a good idea""
DanielleA says, " Here is mine...."Ortiz' and Kingsolver's essays demonstrate
the use of
context just as the movie "The Milagro Bean Field War" does when it
describes the
influences of culture, education and relationships."
pablo says, "try to think of specific scenes or patterns from the movies
/ novel / poems
that we've looked at that would allow you to explore what you want
to talk about."
pablo grins
pablo says, "the more of an essay you can plan out now ....."
DanielleA says, "is mine too general"
Annabelle says, "I don't think so"
PamelaM says, "so these are the final exam questions"
PamelaM says, "it will deinatewly be one of these?"
JessicaH says, "ok, but i think that that is a good movie to look at
in relation to the
readings"
pablo says, "can you explain the "use of context" or these "influences"
a bit more
specifically?"
pablo says, "but it is a good start!"
EBrown3328 says, "ya becasue it uses the same type of context""
pablo says, "try to develop an outline."
pablo says, "what scenes from the movie would you want to talk about?"
Annabelle says, "I like the one where the graduate student was offering
tacos ot the
shrine""
pablo says, "how would you relate these scenes to ortiz's and kingsolver's
ideas about
context?"
DanielleA says, "i have to think about that"
pablo says, "what order would you put these elements in (e.g., does
a discussion of
context in kingsolver & ortiz come first? could you start
with a description of a
specific scene in the movie to set up the question? etc."
pablo goes out.
JessicaH says, "ok"
EBrown3328 says, " i would spend one paragrapg about ortiz's context,
one about
Kingsolvers and one about the movie's context.""
DanielleA says, "does anyone have any suggestions?"
EBrown3328 says, "along with an opening and concluding paragraph.""
JessicaH says, "i tihnk that if we could describe the movie first it
would provide a good
back ground and way to set up the essay"
Masters says, "we only need to write one essay right?"
EBrown3328 says, "ya only one""
PamelaM says, "can we bring our outlines to the fial?""
JessicaH says, "but i cant exactly recall a specific scene that would
be good in this
essay actually"
Annabelle says, "yeah"
EBrown3328 says, "ya we can bring everything ..notes..outlines.etc
"
JessicaH says, "i think that we can bring whatever we want, because
these are not the
specific questions that will be asked of us"
pablo has arrived.
DanielleA says, "i like the scene when the whole town finds out about
Joe's bean field"
PamelaM says, "ohhhhhh""
pablo says, "bring anything you like! except a ghostwriter."
pablo goes out.
Annabelle says, "what happens in that scene, I forget?"
DanielleA says, "they all get upset and go look at the beanfield"
PamelaM says, "i dont remember that movie too well""
Annabelle says, "why?"
DanielleA says, "doesnt ortiz get upeset"
TracyR says, "about what"
DanielleA says, "they dont want the bean field there"
Masters says, "not at first""
Annabelle says, "oh yeah, I remember now"
DanielleA says, "about other peoples stories...i dont know, i'm just
trying to relate
something i guess"
DanielleA says, "oh well, class is almost over"
Annabelle says, "yep, "
Masters says, "it has been fun guys"
DanielleA says, "no not really"
JessicaH says, "yep yep "
EBrown3328 says, "yep""
DanielleA smiles
PamelaM says, "this is our last call :("
Annabelle says, "good luck on the final"
PamelaM says, "class i mena"
DanielleA says, "you too"
TracyR says, "thanks"
JessicaH says, "yeah, good luck!"
Annabelle says, "thank you"
PamelaM says, "good luck everyone"
EBrown3328 says, "thanks all""
JessicaH says, "ok.....so are we leaving or what???"
PamelaM says, "we have 2 minutes"
PamelaM says, "well i think we are done"
JessicaH says, "cool"
DanielleA says, "we should ask paul"
Annabelle says, "does anyone else's brain feel like mush?"
PamelaM says, "i hate finals"
Masters says, "just think about summer..."
EBrown3328 leaves for Mt. Lemmon Classroom

Final Exam Practice Question / Room #3
Question 3: "For both Ortiz & Kingsolver, stories are integral to human life. Kingsolver "could live without electricity ... but not without stories" (156). Ortiz claims that the written word could be like the Pueblo revolution and that through "petry, prose, and other written works that evoke love, respect & responsibility, Native Americans may be able to help the US to go beyond survival" (361). GIven these comments, what do YOU think the value is of studying literature as part of your UA education? How have the stories you've read helped shape the person you are and the person you hope to become? Write an essay based in your reading/viewing and writing experiences in 102 that explores the relationship between stories or texts or representations and the way that you think about and act in the "real world".

Blob guest says, "do u think it matters what we read?"
AdamL says, "yeah"
Stang guest says, "it does absolutely nothing"
Stang guest says, "it is a complete waste of our time"
Blob guest says, "reading does nothing?"
Tekman says, "I think it helps us better understand our past history"
AdamL says, "what we read changes the way we perceive things (texts,
etc) in the future"
Blob guest says, "wow...i think its real important "
Stang guest says, "i'm being sarcastic"
Blob guest says, "i was gonna say"
Tekman lol
Blob guest says, "i think its important to read other works so we can
compare and contrast
views"
Stang guest says, "it really allows us to see things in a new more
inovated way and allows
us to change our reasoning and peerspectives on life"
Blob guest says, "what do u guys think about the choosen readings that
we have read?"
AdamL says, "this question remindsa me of that essay we just did..."
Blob guest says, "are they helpfull?"
Stang guest says, "it what terms"
Tekman says, "yes, I agree, this question is very similar to the third
essay"
PrincessM arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
Blob guest says, "was it worth it to read all the stuff we have read
(if u read it)"
Tekman says, "this stupid computer says I don't have enough memory
to open Word"
----------------------------------SWINGER----------------------------------
In English 102 I have learned about how much I have taken reading and
language for
granted. I now see that they are more than just a bunch of homework
but that in some
cultures people's language may in fact contain their entire history.
I have learned how
Storytelling can relate people's personal experiences to the real world
so that other
people can learn from and enjoy them.
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
AdamL says, "well, what we read allows us to reevaluate our current
thoughts or ideals in
the way that we best see fit"
Alyb guest arrives from Mt. Lemmon Classroom
Stang guest says, "that's definitely true"
Amy says, "I agree""
Blob guest says, "i agree too"
AdamL says, "with me or swinger"
Stang guest says, "it changes our perspectives"
Tekman says, "that's pretty good, Matt"
SWINGER says, "cool thanks"
Amy says, "with you adam""
Blob guest says, "maybe we could use somthing like that for our thesis"
SWINGER says, " I think that might be good"
Blob guest says, "anybody wanna try and write it?"
SWINGER says, "How should we specifically state it, should we add anything?"
Tekman says, "I'll be right back, I'm going to have to reset this dumb
computer"
Tekman (asleep) has disconnected.
Amy says, "what we read does tend to influence the way we feel and
see certain things""
Amy says, "how?""
SWINGER says, "language, whether written or spoken is a window into
something we may or
may not understand. Perhaps this is why it can teach is so much"
Amy says, "that's an interesting way of putting it swinger""
Blob guest says, "think of how much sombody could control u if they
could control all the
experiences (written of spoken) that youve had"
Blob guest says, "when u think about it..its a powerfull tool"
Blob guest says, "this is what we have so far....what we read allows
us to reevaluate our
current thoughts "
AdamL says, "how about this"
-----------------------------------AdamL-----------------------------------
Today is the beginning of the rest of your life. I've heard the
phrase repeatedly, but
what its true significance is that of how our views are so easily influenced
by what we
experience everyday. What we think tomorrow may not be what we
think today. Our own
views of ourselves and others (especially of how we portray society
and culture) are
continually influenced by texts and our own personal experiences;
they allow us to
reevaluate our current ideals and reassess their value, if at all.
Storytelling is far
more important than electricity or any type of technology in this regard,
it allows the
evolution of our mind.
---------------------------------finished----------------------------------
SWINGER says, "Hey that's really good!"
Alyb guest says, "that's good"
Blob guest says, "i agree...thats nice"
AdamL says, "thanks"
Blob guest says, "really nice"
SWINGER says, "I like the idea of incorporating how real experiences
in our lives form our
opinions, not just the ones we read about"
Amy says, "I can't figure it out Meesh""
Amy says, "yeah""
The housekeeper arrives to cart Tekman off to bed.
SWINGER says, "So what do we need to do once we have our thesis?
We should probably agree
on one but then what?"
Tekman has arrived.
Tekman says, "ok, I'm back"
SWINGER tips his hat to Tekman
AdamL says, "i think it says to make an outlline of an essay based
on the thesis"
pablo has arrived.
Tekman says, "apparently, this computer just can't handle the strain
of having Netscape
and Word open at the same time"
SWINGER tips his hat to Paul
Tekman says, "did I miss anything?"
pablo says, "yes, try to figure out a structure for your essay and
then @paste it into the
room."
SWINGER says, "individually or as a group?"
AdamL says, "but thats basically going to be going thru our personal
experiences in
relationship to the texts we read and then comment on the parallelism
between them and
the texts of solomon and the other one"
pablo says, "if you are all working as a group, then just @paste in
suggestions and piece
them together."
pablo says, "there will be a transcript posted of the session that
you can use if you
wish."
Alyb guest says, "okay thanks"
pablo [to SWINGER]: "y'all make the call.
pablo goes out.
SWINGER says, "good I was goin' to ask about that"
PrincessM says, "You guys ive been sick so i am soooo lost..is this
for the final??"
Alyb guest says, "yes"
Tekman says, "yeah"
PrincessM says, "these are the question we have to write on"
AdamL says, "yeah, the question is asking if texts have influenced
your education"
Tekman says, "these are practice questions"
SWINGER says, "Why don't we all work individualy for a minute trying
to develop some
points that will relate to the thesis and then we can need back in
here in a minute or
two"
Tekman says, "THE thesis or our own?"
Tekman says, "did you guys come up with a group thesis or something?"
Blob guest says, "adam pretty much hooked us up"
PrincessM says, "no i am just listening cuz i am too confused..im gonna
talk to pablo
after class"
Tekman says, "Matt, are you there?"
AdamL says, "what was that one essay at the beginning of the year that
talked about how
what we read we can critique on"
AdamL says, "in that war book"
SWINGER says, "yeah I am back"
AdamL says, "i mean beginning of semester"
SWINGER says, "I think all of ours are a little different and sort
of based off of what
Adam said. Mine is Thesis: Personal experiences help shape
the people we are. However,
these experiences are not limited to our own, they can be the experiences
of other's
related to us through language.""
Tekman says, "that's not too bad"
SWINGER says, "What are some good points that we could put into an
essay with a thesis
like ours?"
pablo has arrived.
Alyb guest says, "so basically personal experiences and experiences
we learn about through
stories shape our lives."
AdamL says, "well its a personal essay you need to include points that
show how your own
views may have been shaped by what you have read"
Blob guest says, "maybe show specific examples in the past or in our
lifes"
AdamL says, "or experienced"
SWINGER says, "Yeah, pretty much"
pablo says, "are there specific scenes or patterns in the movies that
we've watched that
you could relate to your thesis? that would work as a springboard
for your ideas?"
pablo goes out.
AdamL says, "springboard, eh"
Blob guest says, "imagining indians could be a good one"
Tekman says, "I think you'd want to put in some specific experience
that showed how this
experience affected the way you think about that thing"
pablo has arrived.
SWINGER says, "I could talk about the extra credit thing I went to
with Simon Ortiz. I
wrote down some quotes"
pablo says, "good, blob, how does it relate to your thesis or
the final readings? are
there specific scenes that you would want to use as evidence?"
pablo nods to swinger
pablo goes out.
Tekman says, "a reoccuring pattern that I've seen in the movies and
texts that we've read
is of class distinctions"
Alyb guest says, "well in Imagining Indians the indians views were
portrayed talk about if
your view changed because you watched it or maybe it didn't and why"
AdamL says, "class as in race, or social status?"
SWINGER says, "For me it is not so much that these people's experiences
have changed my
thinking, but more that I now realize what a powerful impact writing
(more specifically my
writing) can have"
Tekman says, "all the texts showed struggles between different classes
of people"
Amy says, "I missed imagining indians can someone give me a quick idea
of what it was
about?""
SWINGER says, "Do you think that relates enough to the final question>"
Blob guest says, "we could look at our personal experience....after
watching Dances with
Wolves....we all had an impression of the indians...but was that real?"
Tekman says, "either between different races or social or economic
classes"
AdamL says, "after watching fight club, i thought how much i am a prisoner
of society"
Blob guest says, "sorry...i didn't see it"
AdamL says, "the first rule of fight club is don't talk about fight
club"
Amy says, "I did and I felt the same way""
Tekman says, "Imaging Indians was a documentary about how Indians are
portrayed in movies
in our society"
Amy says, "oh, thanks tekman, now it makes sense""
pablo has arrived.
AdamL says, "and how were they portrayed in the movie?"
pablo says, "ok. let's try and finish up the outline ... only
five minutes left.""
pablo goes out.
Tekman says, "the person who made it interviewed different Indians
who had been in these
movies and asked them how they thought they had been treated and how
their people were
portrayed in the film"
AdamL says, "outline?"
Tekman says, "you're welcome"
Stang guest says, " I thought whoever wrote Fight club was seriously
tripping on LSD"
PrincessM says, "yeah why are we making an outline"
AdamL says, "no way"
PrincessM says, "an outline for what'?"
SWINGER says, "Yes, we picked a thesis and now we have to make an outline
that follows it"
AdamL says, "whats our thesis"
Tekman says, "an outline for the essay that we're going to write"
SWINGER says, "a sentence outline will work best"
PrincessM says, "for the final??"
Tekman says, "yes"
Amy says, "our final essay, yeah""
SWINGER says, "the Thesis is something like how personal experiences
(whether our own, or
those of others) can change our opinions"
PrincessM says, "ok i thought these were practice q's but its
the real one for the essay
on fri??"
AdamL says, "i kind of wanna talk about fight club now in my essay"
Tekman says, "these are practice questions"
Tekman says, "you won't find out the real questions until the final"
AdamL says, "no, but the real questions will bear similarities to all
of these"
Blob guest says, "we should probably include somthing about the specific
texts weve
read/experienced"
Amy says, "but they are preparing us for the essay""
Tekman says, "yes, these practice questions will be similar to the
real ones"
PrincessM says, "im just gonna go shoot myself now"
PrincessM says, "and get it over with"
SWINGER says, "Maybe a point on the essay could be how Imagining Indians
has changed our
opinion by showing us a different view of the indians that we have
seen in movies and on
TV"
pablo has arrived.
Amy says, "don't say that, just go over the questions and write test
answers""
pablo says, "thanks all for the hard work."
Tekman says, "that sounds good"
pablo says, "been a pleasure this semester."
pablo says, "see you on friday."
pablo goes out.
Tekman says, "I guess class is over"
Alyb guest says, "bye"
PrincessM says, "bye"
Amy says, "bye you guys, have a great summer""
Blob guest says, "i'm gonna cry :-("

ScottC says, "ya me"
CheryleenT did you or are you writing your thesis statement?
pablo has arrived.
ScottC says, "i'm working on it"
pablo says, "any questions in here?"
pablo says, "i would like you to spend about 4 minutes typing up a
thesis statement and
then each of you should @paste your thesis statement!""
CheryleenT says, "oh"
pablo says, "alright?"
ScottC says, " k"
pablo says, "and please continue your conversation...."
pablo smiles
pablo goes out.
Lindsey has arrived.
ScottC says, "hi"
Lindsey says, "hey"
ScottC says, "Here's my thesis----The type of stories that an individual
hears or enjoys
define one's point of view, shaping that person's beliefs, culture,
and life."
CheryleenT says, "Here's my thesis, although I don't think it's a thesis
but oh well here
it is: It helps the outside world understand that oral traditions
are very important
among the various Native American tribes. These stories from the final
exam reading packet
give the reader another view of Native Americans, aside from reading
history books and
watching movies.""
ScottC says, "you should probably define 'it' and say what the view
is that the storie
give"
CheryleenT says, "ok"
Lindsey says, "hold on I am still working on mine "
CheryleenT says, " I meant the stories that we read"
ScottC says, "k"
pablo has arrived.
pablo says, "hi folks."
CheryleenT says, "hi"
ScottC waves to pablo
pablo says, "were you able to come up with a thesis statement or two?"
CheryleenT says, "yup"
ScottC says, "i've got one"
pablo smiles
pablo says, "great!"
pablo says, "why don't you work together to try to develop a rough
outline."
pablo says, "what scenes or patterns from texts (movies, novel, poems,
essays) would allow
you to say what you want to say?"
pablo says, "what order should they go in?"
pablo says, "how can you relate these scenes back to the question,
to your thesis?"
pablo rides off into the sunset (for a second)
pablo goes out.
CheryleenT says, "a rough outline?"
pablo has arrived.
pablo says, "try to think about what you would put in this essay &
how you would order
it."
pablo says, "first you need to figure out how to connect your preparation
and interests to
one of the questions (thesis)."
pablo says, "then you need to organize your ideas & evidence, to
come up with some sort of
structure for you essay (perhaps an outline)."
pablo says, "what are you all working on?"
ScottC says, "i'm not really gonna worry about specifics until i see
the actual
question...my 1st body paragraph is about 2 papers from high school,
the second is a
journal assignment, and the third uses essay 3"
pablo says, "ok. so you plan to write about your writing experiences."
ScottC says, "pretty much"
pablo says, "good. how will you relate those to the question?"
ScottC says, "i'll use kinsolver and ortiz in the intro to indroduce
what i mean"
pablo says, "you might think about specific ideas or concepts in kingsolver
or ortiz to
employ in your discussion of your own writing experiences."
CheryleenT says, " i would use two selections from the WAR book, essay
3, and the
Imagining Indians movie"
pablo gets it.
pablo says, "how about you cheryleen & lindsey?"
ScottC says, "then i'll write about what i like, why, and how it's
shaped myself"
pablo nods
CheryleenT says, "would that work?"
pablo says, "find key passages in the final readings to use a springboard
for what you
want to say."
pablo says, "probably. most of the study questions allow you
to write about your writing
experiences."
pablo says, "the key then is to link the stories you tell about your
writing to ideas in
kingsolver / ortiz."
Lindsey says, "In both Kingsolver and Ortizs stories they represent
their own way of
representing the Native Americans which gives the reader another way
to view these Native
American's. I am not really sure about this topic yet.
I have to look at the other
questions too"
pablo says, "ok. thanks for the hard work. it's been great
having y'all in class!"
pablo goes out.
CheryleenT says, "hmm, this was fun..."
CheryleenT says, ":("
