Question #1  "Kingsolver writes that "bearing witness is not the same as possession" (155).  What does she mean by "bearing witness" and by "possession"?   How do these concepts resonate with the ideas expressed by Ortiz?  Which of the texts you've read/viewed this semester _represent_ identities, relations and conflicts within & between cultures, genders, classes?  Write an essay in which you discuss how these representations are "bearing witness" or "possessing".

Question 3:  "For both Ortiz & Kingsolver, stories are integral to human life.  Kingsolver "could live without electricity ... but not without stories" (156).  Ortiz claims that the written word could be like the Pueblo revolution and that through "petry, prose, and other written works that evoke love, respect & responsibility, Native Americans may be able to help the US to go beyond survival" (361).  GIven these comments, what do YOU think the value is of studying literature as part of your UA education?  How have the stories you've read helped shape the person you are and the person you hope to become?  Write an essay based in your reading/viewing and writing experiences in 102 that explores the relationship between stories or texts or representations and the way that you think about and act in the "real world".

In English 102 I have learned about how much I have taken reading and language for
granted.  I now see that they are more than just a bunch of homework but that in some
cultures people's language may in fact contain their entire history.  I have learned how
Storytelling can relate people's personal experiences to the real world so that other
people can learn from and enjoy them.

Today is the beginning of the rest of your life.  I've heard the phrase repeatedly, but
what its true significance is that of how our views are so easily influenced by what we
experience everyday.  What we think tomorrow may not be what we think today.  Our own
views of ourselves and others (especially of how we portray society and culture) are
continually influenced by texts and our own personal experiences;  they allow us to
reevaluate our current ideals and reassess their value, if at all.  Storytelling is far
more important than electricity or any type of technology in this regard, it allows the
evolution of our mind.
